The Martian
Today I’m talking about The Martian. The book was written by Andy Weir in 2011 and adapted for the big screen in 2015. It’s about a man who gets stranded on Mars and his struggle to stay alive. Was the movie true to the book? Were there major changes? Keep watching, and I’ll tell you everything.
Mark Watney is an astronaut who was on a two month mission on Mars called Ares 3, but his trip is cut short when a bad sandstorm hits and his crew must evacuate. On the way to ascent vehicle, a communications antenna breaks off and knocks Mark away from his crew. Commander Lewis takes all the time she possibly can to try to find him, but she must eventually make the hard decision to leave Mark in order for the rest of them to survive. Mark is the crew’s botanist, and his secondary task was mechanical engineer, which makes him especially well-suited to be the person who was stranded on Mars.
I absolutely loved both the movie and book on this one. Matt Damon as Mark Watney was perfect, and I really think they got all the casting right in the movie. What I really liked about the book was how well the author explained every mechanical or scientific thing that was happening, and I feel like the book was a bit more dramatic because Mark faced so many more trials while trying to survive on Mars. I had seen the movie a little after it was released, so I knew what would be happening, and I still found myself reading the book like I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. Even though I knew what was going to happen, it was still a very exciting read.
